Welcome to Island Ceramics!

Hello! Welcome to Island Ceramics. A place where the beauty, raw power and emotive force of the sea can be valued and shared. As an islander, being surrounded by it, the sea has always been a constant in life. To be away from the sea for a few days brings me a sense of unease. The unceasing change of movement, tones and light making it never-endingly captivating. The raging of storms to the stillest of days creating a variety of beautiful encounters to be had with the sea.

I created Island Ceramics from my passion for the sea. Each collection shaped with inspiration from sea tones I identify around the coastline of Shetland, aiming to bring a piece of this indoors and offering a feeling of connection to the sea while using each piece. My collections are named with words related to the sea in Shetland dialect to further connect my work to the islands where I soak up my inspiration and call home. I create my pieces to be brought into the home to serve as a reminder of the sea and to assist in a peaceful moment, such as a coffee in an Island Ceramics mug, just like being beside the sea; offering a chance to slow down and be present.

There is an abundance of ways we can appreciate the sea, a kayak on still waters, a simple wander along the beach, a dive into the depths of the North Sea, fishing on a bright summer’s day or spotting the incredible animals that inhabit the sea around us. The list is endless. I for one love wandering along Shetland’s coastline, most commonly alone, and throughout all types of weather, the wildness soothing the storms of the mind. Being beside, in or on  the sea offers me a safe place to be still, to find clarity, to exert energy and to be filled with inspiration. Nature is an absolute treasure and I feel incredibly lucky to call these islands home.

How do you take time to appreciate the sea?
